September has a way of bringing San Francisco outside. The city’s parks, waterfront, and neighborhood streets fill with everything from live music and cultural celebrations to food markets, street fairs, design tours, and some unmistakably San Francisco traditions. This month’s calendar stretches from pianos tucked throughout the Botanical Garden and opera in Golden Gate Park to Chinatown’s Autumn Moon Festival, lowriders in the Mission, and one of the biggest electronic music weekends of the year. Here are some of the events worth putting on your calendar this September.
Downtown First Thursdays: Carnaval SF Takeover
Date: September 3, 2026
Location: 2nd Street between Market and Howard Streets
Time: 5–10 p.m.
Downtown First Thursdays kicks off the month with a Carnaval San Francisco takeover, bringing Latino music and culture into the heart of downtown. Expect DJs, live performances, dancing, drag, food trucks, shopping, and a special set from Sonido La Conga featuring cumbia, salsa, guaracha, and sounds from across Latin America. The street party is free with RSVP.
Flower Piano
Date: September 10–20, 2026
Location: San Francisco Botanical Garden, Golden Gate Park
Time: Performance schedule varies by day
For 11 days, the Botanical Garden becomes an open-air concert hall as Flower Piano places pianos throughout the landscape for scheduled performances and public play. The lineup moves across classical, jazz, Latin music, pop, cabaret, and more, giving visitors a chance to wander the gardens and discover music along the way. Admission is included with Garden admission.
Architecture + the City Festival

The 23rd annual Architecture + the City Festival turns San Francisco itself into the subject, with three weeks of home tours, neighborhood walks, talks, design conversations, and behind-the-scenes access to spaces that are not always open to the public. This year’s program ranges from a Mission District cultural heritage tour to visits inside architecturally significant homes, making it an especially good way to see the city through a different lens.
Opera in the Park
Date: September 13, 2026
Location: Robin Williams Meadow, Golden Gate Park
Time: 1:30 p.m.
One of San Francisco’s longtime outdoor traditions returns to Golden Gate Park for a free afternoon of opera. Music Director Eun Sun Kim leads the San Francisco Opera Orchestra alongside vocalists from the 2026–27 season for a program of arias, duets, and orchestral favorites. Pack a picnic and arrive early for a good spot on the meadow; the concert runs approximately two hours.
Fort Mason Night Market

Location: Fort Mason Center for Arts & Culture
Time: 5–10 p.m.
Fort Mason’s waterfront night market returns with more than 25 food trucks, 50-plus craft vendors, live music and DJs, creative workshops, and plenty of room to wander along the waterfront. The mix of local food, independent makers, art, and sunset views makes this an easy Friday-night outing, and admission is free.
Chinatown Autumn Moon Festival

Location: Grant Avenue between California Street and Broadway
Time: 11 a.m.–5 p.m.
Chinatown celebrates the autumn harvest with two days of food, performances, mooncakes, children’s activities, martial arts, and traditional lion and dragon dancing. The weekend begins with an opening parade and ribbon cutting on Saturday, while stages and street activities continue throughout both days along Grant Avenue. Admission is free.
Lowrider Parade & King of the Streets

Location: Mission Street, Mission District
Time: Noon–8 p.m., with individual events throughout the day
San Francisco’s lowrider culture takes center stage in the Mission with a celebration of cars, artistry, Latino heritage, and neighborhood history. The Lowrider Parade travels along Mission Street from 1–3 p.m., followed by the King of the Streets hydraulic hopping competition at 24th and Mission, while more than 300 lowriders are expected to be displayed during the accompanying car show. The event is free and open to the public.
Muni Heritage Weekend

Location: San Francisco Railway Museum & Don Chee Way Plaza

Few cities can turn public transportation history into a weekend outing quite like San Francisco. Muni Heritage Weekend brings historic streetcars, buses, and cable cars back into service, with free rides on rare vehicles alongside exhibits and family-friendly activities celebrating more than a century of transit history in the city.
Haight-Ashbury Street Fair

The Haight-Ashbury Street Fair celebrates one of San Francisco’s most recognizable neighborhoods with a day of live entertainment, local artists, makers, food vendors, community organizations, and independent merchants. The annual gathering stays closely tied to the creative and countercultural history of the Haight while showcasing the neighborhood as it is today.
Comedy Day

Location: Robin Williams Meadow, Golden Gate Park
Time: Noon–5 p.m.
Bring a blanket and settle in for five hours of stand-up at one of San Francisco’s favorite free traditions. Comedy Day brings dozens of comedians together on one outdoor stage, continuing an event with a long history of appearances by both Bay Area favorites and some of the biggest names in comedy. Admission is free.
Portola Music Festival

Location: Pier 80
Time: Doors open at 1 p.m. each day
Portola returns to Pier 80 for two days of electronic, dance, pop, and alternative music inside one of the city’s most distinctive waterfront festival settings. The 2026 lineup includes Robyn, Dog Blood, Soulwax, Tove Lo, Swedish House Mafia, Tiësto, Zara Larsson, SG Lewis, and more. The festival is 21+ and takes place rain or shine.
Folsom Street Fair

Location: Folsom Street, SoMa

One of San Francisco’s most internationally recognized street fairs returns to SoMa for its annual celebration of leather, kink, alternative culture, art, music, and self-expression. The sprawling event takes over multiple blocks of Folsom Street with community stages, vendors, performances, and visitors from around the world. This is an adults-oriented event, and entry is donation-based.
